Supporting the development and effective management of marine protected areas
Written by Peter Chadwick_AfricanConservationPhotographer
Over the last decade, much of my conservation work has focussed on supporting the development and effective management of marine protected areas within the Western Indian Ocean. I have had the privilege of meeting and working alongside the marine rangers who face immense challenges in their work. While terrestrial rangers are often well supported in their efforts to tackle poaching, marine rangers have little support and global awareness is needed to garner support for them.
I have also worked alongside very positive community members that have taken tremendous strides in developing and managing their own marine resources through locally managed marine areas. Where we provide the opportunities, practical and sustainable mechanisms for conserving habitats and species may be found so that they also positively benefit community livelihoods. I look forward to taking this conservation work even further in the next decade.
