One of South Africa and Namibia’s most charismatic shorebirds, the African black oystercatcher is also Birdlife South Africa’s bird of the year.
Global populations of this stunning bird with its black plumage and bright red bill and legs crashed down to only around 6000 birds but through concerted efforts numbers have climbed steadily and it is once again a common sight along our coastlines. This shows focussed conservation efforts can bring positive results for threatened species.
