Photographing the Cape gannet colony while lying still on top of a large granite boulder for several hours on Malgas Island in the West Coast National Park brought an added benefit when this juvenile gannet first flew in to land on my back and then after hopping off, spent the next hour preening and resting right next to me with an occasional nibble at my ear or camera. Was it trust or youthful naivety on the gannets behalf that allowed such a privileged interaction? I will never know the answer but a very memorable experience none the less!
