Cape Gannets under Stormy Skies on Malgas Island

A thunderstorm hangs over breeding Cape gannets on Malgas Island in the West Coast National Park, South Africa. The island is home to one of the last breeding colonies of these stunning seabirds in the world and sadly even here populations are decreasing on an annual basis due to anthropogenic impacts - Cape gannet populations have decreased by 50% over the last half century. The seabird breeding islands off South Africa although having strict access controls also need their surrounding waters conserved under marine protected areas as this will help with the recovery of fish stocks upon which seabirds feed.
