As darkness falls, Cape gannets settle in for the night at their breeding and roosting site on Malgas Island in the West Coast National Park, South Africa. In the distantance, the lights of Saldana add a orange glow that reflects back on the low-lying fog and the stars shining above.
Malgas Island is one of only two critically important breeding islands for Cape Gannets on the South African coastline. It is hard to believe that our seabirds have the unfortunate title of being the most threatened group of birds in the South African Red Data Book of Birds. Anthropgenic influences are causing severe population crashes and we seriously need to ensure increased conservation efforts and improved ocean management.
