The Hazy Hours Between Dusk and Dawn

It is between the hazy hours of dusk and dawn that colour and movement blur to play games with the mind and where nothing is quite as it seems. It is where the vast landscapes that provide cover for the devious result that rhinos need the full time protection of armed defenders. For the newborn, aged, weakened or just unwary, it may mean the time when breath and life ends in order to allow the lion to remain the king of his domain as he kills to fill his belly.

Photography is an art form and learning its technicalities must be mastered before we then throw the rule book out of the window to allow each of our own individual creative viewpoints to come to the fore. This uniqueness amongst us is a gift that must be encouraged to blossom so that we do not become meek and boring clones of others work.

All five of these images were taken at Mount Camdeboo in the Great Karoo and which lies close to the town of Graaff Reniet. They were taken with the aim of coming up with something a little different where light was low and the camera’s capabilities had to be pushed to the limits. May 2020 be the year of pushing the limits to great new horizons!
